The following FAQs are in response to questions received from the campus
about the Socrates retirement pertaining to email.
- I still get a substantial amount of email
forwarded from my old Socrates account to my CalMail account. Since the
Socrates server is going away, how can I ensure that the mail continues
to be forwarded?
This will not impact the way you receive
your email since the socrates.berkeley.edu email addresses are now a
subdomain of CalMail.
- I use Pine for email. What are my options?
You can obtain a workstation version of Pine from the University of Washington at the following link:
http://www.washington.edu/pine/getpine/
Additionally, Thunderbird is available to the campus community at the Software Central web site: http://software-central.berkeley.edu/software/61-Thunderbird.
Thunderbird is a full-featured client email software application,
offering secure protocols for sending and receiving mail, plain or
styled text composition, filters and spam blocking, multiple account
configuration, address book and built-in spell checker. It also
includes an extensible add-on architecture which allows third-party
developers to extend and enhance its functionality. Thunderbird is a
community-source project from the Mozilla group.
The web mail client at calmail.berkeley.edu,
like the server-based Pine, allows roaming access to email. Desktop
Pine, Thunderbird and other email clients do not provide the same level
of roaming access. Using IMAP will also help with roaming access.
