UCBackup services use IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) software. When the TSM client is installed on a system, and the scheduler program is kept running, TSM will automatically detect changed files and back them up to the designated UCBackup server daily. Files, directories and entire volumes can be recovered easily to the client from the UCBackup server. All backups and recoveries are performed over the campus network.
TSM Features
- After the initial full backup of a client, TSM performs only incremental backups, i.e., only changed files or directories on the client. This helps to minimize the amount of data backed up, and the cost of the service for the customer.
- The TSM scheduler program automatically performs backups during the same time window every day, requiring no user attention. UCBackup provides daily backup status reports in email.
- Under the default policy, TSM retains backups for up to five of the most recently modified versions of a file, so that older versions can be recovered if necessary. Files deleted from the client system can be recovered up to 30 days after deletion.
- For increased data protection, UCBackup maintains an offsite repository containing second copies of all backed-up files.
- Password-protected accounts provide security for your backed-up data. The client can be configured to encrypt backup data before transmission to the TSM server. Please see our Security page.
- TSM client software supports MS Windows, Mac OS, and most Unix/Linux platforms.
- With the correct password and permissions, backed-up data can be recovered with any computer of the same type as the original client with the TSM software installed.
- UCBackup services charges are based on the amount of backup data stored on tape (occupancy). The rate is $0.25/month per gigabyte, with a $2.00 per account fee per month. Please review the backup/archive Retention Policy and Recommendations and Costs of backup/archive for a detailed explanation.
- UCBackup service initiation for desktops, workstations, laptops, and servers is free. Server-class TSM clients receive the following additonal benefits:
- Ability to apply customized management policies for backed up data.
- Dedicated TSM server instances.
- Availability of specialized TSM agents to improve backup efficiency for certain types of database and other applications. There is an additional fee for agent software licenses.
