Socrates Customer Forum

The following are notes taken at the Socrates Customer Forum on April 8, 2008.

Introductions

  • IST's Technical Account Management (TAM) and Service Desk staff

Discussion of IST's current web hosting options

  • Calweb Pro recharge rate under review - setup fee may be discontinued
  • Socrates migrations/retirement in late Fall 2008

Next steps:

  • Find answer for tilde URL people.
  • Pine mail - need to provide better instructions on how to move box.
  • Pine mail - need to provide better instructions on how to set up mail to retrieve remotely.
  • How do we provide a department who uses CalWebPro for example with a single account, single site but needs multiple users and logons with different levels of access and privacy?
  • Provide support for Stat Applications - such as how to use etc. something IST doesn't currently offer. IST provided fortran and stats consulting when we had some 9 people supporting socrates. This faded over the years through attrition and other events. It's been a number of years since this was the case.
  • Provide SLA/MOU on service cancellation and the return of materials - materials not necessarily deleted.
  • Announce change in fees for CalWebPro and Web Farm as soon as they are approved - this should be minus the set up costs. (currently $210)
  • Check out how to use two or more COA's for a service.
  • Check out monthly billing for Emeritus.
  • Fee for service vs. free service. The faculty made it very clear they are unhappy with the universities continued trend to nickel and dime them to teach and research. They want subsidized services.
    • Comments:
      • We don't pay for classrooms; we are encouraged to move instruction online and then we get nickel and dimed with charges.
      • This is a lot of extra work for faculty.
      • We don't have to pay to check out books from the library; why do we have to pay for this?

Previously unanswered questions:

  1. What about my site/pages that are linked from other websites, published articles, etc.?

We are looking for an answer.
  2. Will there be a central, Unix-based SAS/SPS service run by IST? Will there be a central, Unix-based service for students to use for development?

    We are looking into it.
  3. I'm retired; will my (online) scholarship go away when I die (leave the university, etc.)?

Accounts go away upon separation from the university.
  4. What is IST's commitment to archiving data?

Not today; we're looking into it.
    • Comments:
      • Part of the service cancelation is return of digital material.
      • This is a librarian issue.
  5. What can end users do now to archive their stuff?

We are working on identifying life cycle management with new services.
  6. When we migrate we also need to improve our site; will you help us with that?

It depends on what you want. IST currently does not have a design group, but hourly consulting is available through the Web Applications unit.
  7. Is there any flexibility around multiple chart strings, sharing service cost?

    We're researching a solution.
  8. I'm emeritus; how do I pay? My department isn't going to want to do it.

Monthly; via an invoice every month. IST is required to bill as service is incurred.
